The story takes place over thousands of years in a region known as the Chains of Worlds. Players take on the role of legates – commanders who oversee the construction of bases and lead strategic battles. The narrative is unique in that you play as different legates from different factions, giving you the opportunity to look at the conflicts from different perspectives.

Centuries after a major event called the Exodus, new factions emerge to challenge the established order. The Return Coalition, led by the Truth Committee, yearns to return to Earth, rejecting the teachings of mysterious spirits. Meanwhile, the Sponge Empire advocates conquering a new dimension called the Psychosphere rather than seeking the promised havens.

Throughout the game, players complete missions for different factions, shaping the history of the Psychosphere. The extensive time frame makes it difficult to introduce traditional human characters, leading to creative storytelling. Perimeter: Legate Edition offers a deep and intricate narrative, although some content was removed from the international release.
